CURATORIAL TEXT
Where does the human being end and where does the algorithm begin?
How much computational is inside the human nature?
And what is this big difference between an algorithm that manages the flow of information on the Internet and the distribution mechanism of nerve signals in our brain?
If it is true that algorithms learn from us, they study us, they learn to know us, it is also true that they often do it so well that we depend on those “advice” – or mental impositions – that they give back to us, creating a unique network of addictions where it is almost impossible to separate who is “learning” from whom.
How much do we know about all this, how much do we perceive, where does our awareness end?
Cognitive Awareness is a photographic project by the artist Alessandro Risuleo, aimed precisely at raising awareness about the use of technologies in our lives, especially the one we ignorantly refer to as “Artificial Intelligence”, actually known as Machine Learning.
With his series of 15 photographs accompanied by Augmented Reality, Risuleo represents this discussion through the images of human beings on a pedestal, in the center of the scene, who, although already contaminated and unconscious, manage to awaken and counter the invisible force that controls them and that blocks them.
The works are NFT, registered on the blockchain.
The vernissage will also host a live performance, led by a voice created through the use of algorithms.
Cognitive Awareness – The Beginning is just the beginning of a larger project that will see all of us as protagonists and will be curated by me in the spring of 2022, in collaboration with the Media design course of IED Rome, in which artists from all over the world that use machine learning to create their works, will be invited. Webinars and dissemination meetings on the use of artificial intelligence in the world of creativity, art and culture will accompany us on this path of assuming artistic awareness about our present and future.

ARTIST BIO
Born in Rome in 1971, Alessandro Risuleo immediately became passionate about visual communication systems. After over 20 years of experience as Art Director and advertiser, he found in photography a medium of artistic expression that allows him to escape and freely express his creativity.
In the author’s works, it is the viewer who becomes the absolute protagonist with his personal interpretative key. A photographic technique within its maximum expressive potential, a masterful use of light and shadows, a great mastery of digital techniques and an openness to new technologies, are the ingredients that make his work original and incisive. He already exhibited with success in different contexts: from the 16th China International Photographic Art Exhibition to the 2015 Biennale of Photography, to the MIA Photo Fair in 2014 and 2015, in 2016 at the ABIDAD international fair in Sao Paulo – Brazil, moreover in 2016 in his personal exhibition in ROME , NUMEN contemporary art gallery, and in November 2017 at the Queens Museum in New York. He has been teaching at the European Institute of Design in Rome since 2013.
